Portraits

This project is in its infancy. So far, Will's technique for photographing people has been to carry a camera someplace interesting and hope for the best. He's had some good luck that way (e.g. Fountains and Promenade), but he would like to learn to photograph people on purpose.

“Everyone has a story to tell, and a portrait should tell part of a story — a moment, a mood, an aspect of character — with film. That can mean anything from carrying a camera into someone's daily routine, to traveling to an interesting location and creating a story on the spot. One thing I am not interested in is a studio cloth, a stool and a strobe: I want the portrait to emerge from the interactions among the subject (or subjects), the location, and me.

When I say “model”, I don't mean a human clothes hangar typical of fashion and advertising photography. I am looking for people with expressive faces, people with a distinctive personal style, people who live or work in interesting places, and people who think that collaborating through a camera lens sounds fun. A degree of physical attractiveness is helpful, particularly in the face, but it's not the only or even the primary consideration.

If that sounds like you (or someone you know!), please let me know.” — Will
